Reimagining Grainger Through Performance

Reimagining Grainger Through Performance

Grainger Reimagined is a three-part series of online presentations exploring the ways in which Grainger’s outputs as composer, arranger, and performer have been recast in the contemporary moment.

The second presentation in the series, "Reimagining Grainger Through Performance," will be given by noted jazz guitarist and composer James Chirillo on Thursday, February 22 at 4:00 PM (Eastern US) via Zoom. Of this presentation, Chirillo writes:

In this presentation I will introduce my Grainger Suite, which was commissioned by the US Military Academy Jazz Knights at West Point. I will speak to what was involved in integrating and translating Grainger’s Sussex Mummers’ Christmas Carol and Hill Song No. 2 to allow for improvisation in a jazz context.

Sunday Tour with Teresa Balough

Sunday Tour with Teresa Balough

Percy Grainger was one of the few creative voices of the 20th Century to stress the importance of the future of music. He became increasingly devoted to the development of his 'Free Music' ideals and and their implementation in the physical world through the development of the Cross-Grainger Free Music Machines.

Join us on Sunday, March 3 at 2:00 PM (Eastern US) as Grainger scholar Teresa Balough leads the next tour of the Percy Grainger Home and Studio (PGH&S), focusing on the concepts and wider implications of Grainger's Free Music. Discover how the Percy Grainger Home and Studio functioned as Grainger's creative workshop through our latest exhibition, Tone, Rhythm, Pitch: Exploring Percy Grainger’s Free Music, a showcase of Grainger’s work in Free Music through objects, images, and text.

This event is free and open to the public. As space is limited, please follow this link to register and view additional information.

The Percy Grainger Society's events are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

2024 Spring Open House

Spring Open House

Each spring, the Percy Grainger Society invites the local community to visit the Percy Grainger Home and Studio at 7 Cromwell Place in White Plains, New York. From the music room to the bedrooms and beyond, the house quietly illustrates how each Grainger family member made this space an echo of their individual interests and unique personalities. The house, built in the late 1800s, is a beloved White Plains landmark and a graceful reminder of White Plains neighborhoods from days gone by.

We are delighted to announce that pianists Łukasz and Małgorzata Wilga will be joining us for the Fourth Annual Spring Open House at the Percy Grainger Home and Studio on Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 PM (Eastern US). This exclusive event will showcase the exceptional talent of the Wilga duo in the intimate setting of Percy Grainger’s historic home. A tour of the Percy Grainger Home & Studio follows the performance.

While the event is free and open to the public, space limitations require registration. Register here to attend. We look forward to seeing you!
